A Country in Crisis

You must have heard the SPLM has recalled its ministers from GONU. You must have wondered what that really means and you might have hoped that the Sudan does not go back to war…..

Here in Juba, the news has been received with great support and appreciation. The town and the people are calm… life goes on normally.

But the media and some people are jumping to conclusions saying war in imminent. Maybe war will eventually break out, but not now. The general feeling up til now is that the SPLM has to stop the NCP from embrassing it time and time again.

All in all, just wanted to reassure you people that we are all fine down here in Juba.

    I am just going to sit back and watch this whole thing unfold…

    And me being the pessimist…

    Things are okay for now. However if they continue to deteriorate then war is inevitable. Sigh!

    Sorry, the realist in me is louder than the idealist nowadays.

    Well supposedly they have rejoined but we’ll see how long that lasts.

    @Rob… it was nice meeting you in Juba after the show by Mary. I’ll still have to mention about that later on this blog

    @Dalu & @Drima
    This standoff will be resolved peacefully… but that does not rule out the almost inevitable fate that there will be war again…

    @Aaron
    They haven’t rejoined yet… looks like there was a mistake by one of the ministers who said its resolved.

    Damn it.
    I was planning to finally visit and see my Grandparents. A war will totally fuck that up.

    Sorry, kind of unrelated, but I needed to spew
    some frustration. :’(

    How’s your health?

    Clearly the current political situation in Sudan seems poised to break down completely, if it is not managed. The thing is, both parties are talking to each other in some form.

    The SPLM has withdrawn its ministers from the central government, but they continue to talk to the NCP in some form to convey their grievances. Looking at this from a purely theoretical conflict analysis perspective, it is not the end of the CPA nor the start of war. As SR indicated in the post, not yet! But….?

    Will the NCP admit its strategies are failing the nation? Grudgingly perhaps?

    The so-called international community has also been acting as if the only trouble in the country is Darfur. With the NCP loving every bit of its Tom and Jerry game with the international community on UN peace-keepers in Darfur, it can degrade the CPA at will. Northern politicians like Turabi’s recent comments and El Mahdi’s remarks about the status of the CPA only help the NCP to see that everyone is on its side when it came to trashing the CPA.
